Nutrition Basics for Sustainable Fat Loss
By Fenny · August 28, 2026 · 3 min read
Sustainable fat loss rarely comes from extreme restriction — it comes from a small, consistent calorie deficit built on habits you can maintain. Prioritise protein at each meal, build meals around whole foods, and track your progress over weeks rather than days. Consistency beats perfection every time.
Training matters, but nutrition is what actually creates the calorie deficit your body needs to lose fat — burning more energy than you take in. Go too extreme with that deficit, though, and you'll end up tired, hungry, and losing muscle instead of just fat. A moderate, manageable deficit holds up far better over time.
Protein matters most during fat loss because it helps you hold onto muscle while you lose weight. Good sources include eggs, chicken, fish, lean meat, beans, lentils and yoghurt — aim to get some at every meal, alongside vegetables, fruit and whole-food carbs like oats, potatoes, rice, whole grains and legumes to fuel your training.
Portion control matters just as much as food choice — even healthy foods add up if you're eating too much of them. Rather than cutting out your favourite foods entirely, learn to manage your portions and fit treats in in moderation. It's more realistic, and it keeps you from feeling so restricted that you end up overeating.
Hydration matters too — drink enough water throughout the day, both for your cells and to avoid feeling dizzy mid-workout. Sugary drinks and sodas can quietly add a lot of calories without much nutritional value, so swapping them for water or lower-calorie alternatives is an easy win.
Sustainable fat loss was never about a perfect diet or cutting out entire food groups — it's about building eating habits you can actually keep up. Protein, vegetables, fruit, whole foods and controlled portions, paired with regular training and proper recovery, is what gets you there and keeps you there.
